- An important rice trade (in exchange of cowrie) flourished between Bengal and Maldives in 14th century. This was led by Sultana Khadeeja of Maldives- the longest ruling queen and the cowrie trade was the longest existing and most famous in the world- which continued till World War I. News in.Asia. -The changing monsoon sky and wind pattern from late-August to early-September- is also an important reminder of a trade between erstwhile Bengal (present day Odisha, Bengal and Bangladesh regions) and Maldives- based on one of the most extensive and long- running trading network of cowrie-shell currency and barter system.
